Lummox and I were discussing of how to do markings on an AWD. Now, this is a particularly tricky subject as AWDs are known for their splotchy coat pattern that is relatively unforgiving when you wish to edit it. Lum and I were going back and forth on this idea, but I'd figure we post it here for you guys to add on to and so others can be a part of the discussion.

The Idea:
You start out with a single base color. This base color can be various shades of brown, starting at a very light whitish cream to an almost blackish brown hue with many colors in between, perhaps some reddish hues. If we wish to keep it at the characteristic orange-ish AWDs are known for, we could do shades of that. Once the base is decided upon you could have various "splotch" patterns that cover up the dog in different ways. There could be few splotches, thick splotches, all different kinds of patterns. After that you could control the opacity of the splotch pattern on the dog, essentially changing how well it blends into the base. There could also be the possibility of a few white/cream undermarks to layer over the splotches.

Even for a crappily drawn example that's so much better than what I could ever do, Roman. And I certainly like the premise of that, especially with a diagram. Perhaps we should get some base line art eventually drawn so that other artists can begin experimenting with markings.

EDIT: Actually, I'm liking that pose. I think when we do the official thing a pose like that would be quite nice since it allows you to see both eyes, legs, unders, and tail of the dog and gives you a nice overall view of your character.

Hahaha, thanks Roman! Muchly appreciated. I might even experiment myself with some base colors, since I assume that's going to be a principal thing we're going to have. That and he's just so coot I want to doodle on his squiggles anyway.

There was actually one marking I saw on a photograph of a wilddog that I think would be a really interesting one to implement. It would be cool if we could go through photos and name some of the markings we see of those in the wild, too!

It was like stripes, but not one you'd see on a tiger.. more like a velociraptor. There could be three or so, starting from the top of the back and working their way down towards the belly. Here's a picture to show what I mean:

On its back it looks a little like stripes!

Then maybe another option could be a black stripe on the head, like that one has? Then different colored ears & tails.
