I can't believe there's not a pet thread! Did I miss it?
Anyway, I thought I'd post my pups, because I'm super dog-centric. I adore primitive hunting and guardian breeds. I keep all primitive hunting breeds because I love their temperaments-- they're always driven, willful, but tend to be sensitive and great family companions for those who can be patient and tolerant. I do a lot of things with my dogs - hiking, camping, running, biking, but we're new to sports and hunting.
Introducing...
TK, the Shikoku! 7 years old.
Shikoku are a medium-sized Japanese breed traditionally used for hunting boar and deer. Few hunters in Japan use Japanese breeds anymore, and those who do rarely choose to use Shikoku. They have sharp instincts and are quite frenetic and reactive, but are primarily kept as show dogs today. The Shikoku is in decline and may very well be the next Japanese breed to face extinction.
We're going to do Dock Diving this year and I hope to train him to retrieve downed waterfowl. I would have liked to use him for flushing. but he's not very "birdy".
London, the Malamute. 7 years old.
London is a therapy dog. We are semi-active in nosework. I'd wanted to do SAR work with him when he was younger, but plans fell through on my part.
Not many people realize Malamutes and Malamute-types were all-purpose hunting and camp dogs before they were repurposed to mainly sledding and heavy hauling. London has a strong hunting drive and wants to flush birds or bay critters, but he's big and he's blind--and more suited for therapy work.
Nami, the Kishu! 2 years old.
Nami is new to the family. She, like TK, is a Japanese breed used to hunt boar and deer. Kishu are more commonly used as hunting dogs among the Japanese breeds, even to this day. Kishu were primarily "colored" like Nami is in the past, but they are primarily white in color today due to the popular sire effect that ripped through the breed.
Nami was trained to hunt boar by her previous owner (and my friend). I hope attend agility with her and use her for flushing birds.
What about you guys? What kinds of pets do you have!?
